i was just at the Hightower show/party at The Bowl in greenpoint, and i have to say i can't remember the last time i was surrounded by so many beautiful girls and so many smelly guys. like peanut butter and jelly, they always end up together.

anyone know the number of arrests from friday's critical mass? i didn't see any but heard there were some sneaky moves being pulled by the nypd. . . like popping out from between parked cars to nab riders. aside from that, there needs to be a lot more solidarity next month. the ride kept splitting up arbitrarily, some individuals thought that people were getting spooked easily about possible cops lying in wait. but you only make it worse when you drop your numbers from 200 to 30. talk about easy pickins. safety/power in numbers, people, large numbers.

I now relate this story when I was 8 and was makin' a performance at class about our planet moviment around the sun. I said out loud "it's transação", but it's "transLAção" and "transa" is a word that fits for "sex". Allright. I have a question. Do you get depressed when some weird people contact you on these friendsters thing? And they send you a message tellin' everything about them? shit. another cyclist has been killed. details are slim at this point, but sadly Keith Alexander died yesterday while riding his bike. among many other things, Keith was a prestigious designer, a new school professor, and toured extensively with Dee Snider of Twisted Sister, Primal Scream and Carnivore. he was also a major proponent of body piercing and other body modifications. there is a small blurb here. i wish i had more information. thanks to Nick and boing boing for the heads up.
*UPDATE: apparently Keith died as a result of not wearing a helmet, a vehicle was not involved. so to all of the too-cool-for-school kids out there buying your new track bikes. . . give up a little vanity and get a helmet. give us fewer reasons to have memorial rides.

KINDA LIKE SAVING YOUR SOUL THROUGH BLOODY KNUCKLES

i love it when people have good stories. and no one really tops the S.T.R.E.E.T.S. kids. like how on tour their roadie flipped out of the loft bed in the van, and landed on a jar of peanut butter. a glass jar of peanut butter. that broke. apparently the "yawning" wound was so deep that the physician said he could fit his entire index finger inside. but that's just kind of gross. the real topper i heard was how mr. johnny and mike took mushrooms and then decided it would be fun to climb into the trunk of a compact, close it, and drink beers. only johnny had the only set of keys. and the shrooms were kicking in hard. there probably could have been a pretty bad end to the story, with two guys found days later with 24 empty beers and massively pissed pants. but instead mike eventually freaked out and started flailing and accidentally hit the emergency release cable inside. it's probably good that it was some new rental car that actually had one of those things. keep that in mind for the next time you get kidnapped.

We are very pleased to announce the first New York solo exhibition by SWOON. Turning the 76 Grand Street gallery into a ramshackle labyrinthine city of paper and paint, SWOON will be producing her most ambitious installation to date.

SWOON’s worlds are often populated by realistically rendered-- and evocatively cut-out- street people, often her friends and family. Riding bikes, talking on a stoop, going grocery shopping-- these people traverse a cityscape of her own unique invention. Bridges, fire escapes, water towers and street signs create crisscrossing shadows and spaces through which her figures move. Inspired by both art historical and folk sources, ranging from German Expressionist wood block prints to Indonesian shadow puppets, SWOON is a master of using cut paper to play with positive and negative space in a conceptually driven exploration of the experience of the streets.
